2015 marks the Year of Food and Drink in Scotland. To celebrate the month of March, which has the theme ‘Brewing and Distilling’, we are delighted that Derwyn Hewitt, Director of Isle of Mull Brewing Company, has joined us to tell us a bit about Oban Bay Brewery and Britannia's own label Bloodhound Beer.

2012 saw the launch of Bloodhound Beer in honour of Royal Racing Yacht Bloodhound, acquired by The Royal Yacht Britannia Trust in 2010, but once owned by Her Majesty The Queen and Prince Philip in the 1960s. Every summer, Bloodhound is available for day sailing from Oban Marina around Scotland’s West Coast, crewed by former HMY BRITANNIA Royal Yachtsmen. It was only fitting therefore that Oban Bay Brewery were chosen to create our Bloodhound Beer.

1. When was the Oban Bay Brewery established?

We first brewed in June 2009 after acquiring the 5 barrel plant from the Isle of Mull Brewery in Tobermory, Mull. All our beers are made from 100% natural ingredients and we take great pride in both the taste and quality of our beers. Our aim is to produce beers that everyone can enjoy, not just the more sophisticated real ale drinkers, and we will continue to work to achieve this.

2. What are the main ingredients that go into Bloodhound Beer?

Predominantly optic pale ale and lager malts, which are light malts with a biscuity and caramel taste. We use Styrian Golding hops to produce a citrusy and slightly spicy finish.

3. How is the beer matured?

We do not use wooden casks to mature our beer, but rather cold filtered conditioning to produce our bottled beer.

4. Oban Bay Brewery is located in Oban, beside the sea. Do you think the flavour of Bloodhound Beer is influenced by the coastal climate?

Absolutely, we have produced a beer to complement the "refreshing" Scottish coastal climate.

5. Why were you interested in making Bloodhound Beer?

Royal Racing Yacht Bloodhound is a real highlight for the Oban area during the summer months. Following the initial contact from The Royal Yacht Britannia, and our brief to produce a celebration beer and label design, we knew it would be a fun project.

6. Describe Bloodhound Beer in 3 words.

Crisp, citrusy, refreshing.

Bloodhound beer can be purchased in our Gift Shop at Ocean Terminal, Edinburgh and is also for sale in our Royal Deck Tea Room on board.
