Coat of Arms Blog

Congratulations to the two winners of The Royal Yacht Britannia’s nation-wide Design a Coat of Arms schools competition!!

Winner of the p1-3 category: Clara van Daal, 7, of Bearsden Primary School in Glasgow

Winner of the P4-7 category: Abby Irvine, 9, of Sheuchan Primary School in Stranraer

We asked pupils to use their own hobbies, interests and achievements as inspiration to design a bold Coat of Arms. Elements could include family or friends, pastimes, favourite things, personal accomplishments, even their family pets!

Glitter Fest!

We were thrilled when over 600 entries from schools all across Scotland landed on our desks – LADEN with glitter! We’re STILL finding stray glitter everywhere - floating in our tea, sparkling on our keyboards and glinting on our phones!

We’d like to extend a big thank you to all the schools throughout Scotland who entered our competition.

Kayt Turner, Picture Editor of The Scotsman, and Britannia’s Naval Architect (and self-confessed coat of arms geek!) Derek Miller made up our judging panel. They had a hard job on their hands to pick a winner from each of our two categories – P1-3 and P4-7.

Both judges agreed that it was a joy to look through all of the coat of arms, and our fellow colleagues admired the high quality of the colourful, creative submissions.

Top of the Class!

Lynda and Jen from Britannia’s Marketing Department visited Clara and Abby at their schools to congratulate them on their win.

The first stop was Sheuchan Primary in Stranraer, where they received a warm welcome from Abby, her teacher and headteacher, her parents and classmates who were delighted to receive a bumper supply of arts and crafts materials to use for their next creative project.

Next stop was Bearsden Primary in Glasgow to visit Clara and her class. They too were very excited with their art and crafts bundle and Clara's teacher and parents also came along to join in the celebrations.

Both winners were given a cuddly corgi toy and a framed print of their winning design, before posing for photographers from local papers.

Royal Day Out!

Abby and Clara will also be invited to spend a Royal Day Out aboard Britannia during the summer which will be a chance for them to meet judges Kayt and Derek, before their drawings are displayed on Britannia’s tour route for our visitors to admire.

Well done Clara and Abby!
