Christmas in Edinburgh

During the most wonderful time of the year, Edinburgh offers a great range of activities to give you that festive feeling. Read on for our guide to a very merry Christmas in Scotland’s capital city!

Christmas on board

Join us on 2 and 3 December for our Christmas Weekend. With complimentary shortbread and mulled wine served over this special weekend, it really is the perfect way to start your celebrations in style. On 3 December, the Edinburgh Military Wives Choir will be singing festive tunes in the State Drawing Room and for the first time, Her Majesty The Queen’s private Scottish Estate, Balmoral, is gifting the Royal Yacht a 7ft Scots Pine Christmas Tree. The tree will be traditionally decorated and on display in Britannia’s State Drawing Room with stunning decorations throughout the State Apartments for visitors to enjoy. Don't miss our wonderful shop full of gift ideas and stocking fillers. Finish your Christmas visit in the Royal Deck Tea Room and sample our festive winter warmers, including a delicious hot chocolate and hot toddy!

Remember to look out for our cuddly Christmas corgis hiding around the ship to win a badge!

Edinburgh’s Festivities

Retail therapy is aplenty in Edinburgh from the popular shops along Princes Street and George Street to the smaller, more niche, independent shops in the Grassmarket, West End and Stockbridge. Finding the perfect gift for each of your loved ones will be easy with such a great variety to choose from.

Take a break from shopping with an afternoon that will end happily ever after! This year’s annual King’s Theatre pantomime tells the fairy tale of Cinderella. With laughs for all, this is sure to get you feeling the magic of the season.

In the city centre, ice and snow sculptures feature in a stunning new ‘Journey Through Frozen Scotland’ experience, making George Street the coolest place in town!

The Dome’s stunning lights adorning the Graeco-Roman façade really do mark the start of the festive season for Edinburgh residents. Make sure you take a look inside too, where the amazing decorations continue and a special festive menu features in the Grill Room.

Markets in Princes St Gardens have become a staple of Christmas in Edinburgh with over 100 enchanting wooden huts full of beautiful gifts, ornaments and mouth-watering culinary delights, from mulled wine to German bratwurst! Edinburgh’s weekly farmers’ markets are also another great place to spot a unique gift or the ingredients for the perfect Christmas dinner.

Advent calendars don’t come any bigger than this! Each day from 1 - 25 December a new image of Edinburgh from days past will be shown on the side of General Register House on Princes St.

Spot Santa Claus! What would Christmas be without a visit to the grotto? Santa has a very busy schedule in the weeks up to the 25th December, with many opportunities at both Ocean Terminal Shopping Centre and in the city centre to let him know what present you would like this year.

Get into the festive spirit with our Christmas video featuring six adorable corgis!
