Welcoming back the Royal Yachtsmen to Britannia
If you’re visiting The Royal Yacht Britannia from Monday 15 May – Thursday 18 May then you’re in for a treat! We are welcoming back 60 former Royal Yachtsmen, affectionately known as ‘Yotties’, for their annual reunion on board.
What is Yotties week?
The Royal Yacht Britannia is the official headquarters of The Association of Royal Yachtsmen and that is why each year the Yotties travel to Edinburgh from all over the UK to work alongside Britannia’s current maintenance team. Donning their white overalls once more, the Yotties will be on board to answer your questions and tell their stories from their time on board.
Find out how long they served on Britannia? Where did they sleep? Which members of the Royal family did they meet whilst they were on board? If you dare, ask if they had a nickname!
Not only will they be here to entertain visitors with first-hand experiences on life below decks, the Yotties will also re-enact the rum ceremony, historic naval tradition that was practised aboard the Royal yacht until 1970. At 4pm they’ll stop painting, scrubbing, sanding and polishing for their daily tot of Pusser’s rum.
Who are the Royal Yachtsmen?
When Britannia was in Royal service, over 220 crew worked on board. Once a sailor became a Royal Yachtsman on Britannia he entered a world quite unlike any other in the Royal Navy. His orders were nothing less than to ‘strive for daily perfection’. Hand-picked to meet the very highest standards, each and every sailor chose this special ship for the honour and privilege of serving Her Majesty The Queen and country.
What is the Association of Royal Yachtsmen?
Her Majesty The Queen is the Patron of the Association, founded in 1989 by Albert ‘Dixie’ Deane MBE RVM. It is dedicated to bringing together many of the estimated 3,296 Yotties who served on board HMY Britannia between 14 January 1954 and 11 December 1997.
We look forward to welcoming you aboard Britannia for what promises to be a great Yotties week!
