Steeped in Royal History
Built in 1936 by Camper & Nicholsons, BLOODHOUND was purchased by Queen Elizabeth II and Prince Philip in January 1962 as the successor to the Royal racing yacht Bluebottle. Before entering Royal service, BLOODHOUND underwent a major refit that included a lighter alloy mast, a new diesel engine, improved accommodation, and modifications that made her easier to sail with a small crew. Prince Philip quickly developed a fondness for the yacht, praising her exceptional handling and seaworthiness.
During her eight years of Royal ownership, BLOODHOUND became far more than a family yacht. She competed in prestigious events such as Cowes Week, cruised extensively around the west coast of Scotland, and carried members of the Royal Family, including Prince Charles and Princess Anne, on memorable summer voyages. A unique aspect of her service was Prince Philip's decision to make BLOODHOUND available to yacht clubs, allowing hundreds of sailors to gain experience of offshore racing and cruising. The initiative proved hugely successful, with BLOODHOUND sailing more than 45,000 nautical miles between 1962 and 1969 and spending much of each season at sea.
One of the highlights of BLOODHOUND's Royal career came in 1969 when she undertook her longest voyage, sailing through the Kiel Canal, into the Baltic Sea and along the Norwegian coast to coincide with a Royal visit to Norway aboard Britannia. Later that year, rising operating costs led to her sale, bringing an end to her distinguished Royal service.
Her Place Within The Royal Yacht Britannia Trust
After passing through several owners and undergoing major restorations, BLOODHOUND was secured for future generations when she was purchased by The Royal Yacht Britannia Trust in 2010.
Restored to her former Royal colours, BLOODHOUND returned to Scotland and is now displayed alongside the former Royal Yacht Britannia in Leith. She continues to sail each summer often off the coast of Oban, ensuring that her remarkable legacy as one of Britain's most famous and beloved yachts lives on.
