What to wear when visiting The Royal Yacht Britannia

A visit to The Royal Yacht Britannia is a chance to follow in the footsteps of Royalty aboard the UK’s last Royal Yacht. While you are exploring the five decks, from the elegant State Apartments and Crew’s Quarters, to enjoying tea and scones in the Royal Deck Tearoom, comfort is key. Read on for our go-to guide on what to wear (and what not to wear) for a comfortable and enjoyable visit.
What to Wear
Comfortable Clothing
There’s no dress code on Britannia, so wear what makes you feel comfortable:
- T-shirts, jeans, jumpers, and casual tops are all great options.
- Weather-appropriate layers are a must. Scotland’s climate can change quickly all year round so layers are ideal.
Practical Footwear
You will be walking across five decks and up and down staircases or using lifts:
- Choose comfortable, flat shoes like trainers, walking shoes or boots.
- Avoid anything slippery or hard to walk in, such as flip-flops.
Light Outerwear
A portion of the tour takes visitors outside:
- In Spring/Summer, bring a light jacket or waterproof
- A hat or scarf to wear in the cooler months.
Hands-Free Bags
A small backpack or crossbody bag is ideal for keeping your hands free while exploring the five decks with our complimentary audio guide handset, BSL/ASL tablet or Braille script. You can use your own mobile phone, should you wish, to listen to the audio tour with your headphones.
What Not to Wear/Bring
- Avoid heels, flip-flops, or shoes with slippery soles as you will most likely be walking and standing throughout your tour. If it is wet, the decks may become slippery too.
- Large backpacks or suitcases can be awkward in the narrow corridors of the ship in some parts of the tour route. Please speak to a member of our team upon arrival who will be happy to help you store your bags in our luggage store while you visit.
- There is no need for suits, dresses, or anything fancy. You will feel more at ease in casual wear.
The Royal Yacht Britannia is a relaxed and welcoming place where you can enjoy the history without worrying about what you’re wearing. Just bring your curiosity for a great day out!
